Many Canadians continue to believe we have the best healthcare system in the world. The only other countries that share our universal socialized government funded only healthcare system is Cuba and North Korea. Unbelievably, many Canadians also tout Cuba's healthcare system because they believe the propaganda.
This link gives you an all too clear picture of where socialized medicine can go if left completely to the responsibility of the government. As you look at these pictures of hospitals in Cuba, remember the words "cost effective" and consider the implications when these words replace good medical care.
For extensive reading about the issues with Canada's healthcare system, read What's Wrong with Healthcare? Consider the road we are travelling when the NDP, friends of Medicare, the media etc promote socialist style medicine and systems only and the NDP praises Cuba. Reality check anyone?

Socialized Medicine

I am not surprised at all. When I travelled inland and saw the deterioration and housing that the regular Cubans put up with compared to the tourist areas, there was no question in my mind that any money at the governments disposal went for tourism and the elite party members (Their large ocean front properties and homes were pointed out to me).
That was a horrendous story re the poor woman with the ruptured appendix, but as you may recall we in Calgary have had at least two similar cases in the past few years (both died).
Canada has gone from amoung the best health care systems in the world to about number 16 according to the United Nation's World Health Organization. Most of this fall from grace has occured in the past fifteen years. So Cuba, move over; here we come.
Great blog and great find!
I wonder if Al hasn't left where we had past acquaintance to explore new territories.
I appreciate concern about health care affordability and expanding need with changing demographics.
I'm not going to give you a left-wing rant about the virtues of socialist medicine. Rather I encourage you to explore the different options people have pursued in different times and places. It is much easier to follow a successful model rather than figure something out from scratch.
Canada uses a system of public hospitals and private providers.
Public health insurance is on an opt in/opt out basis for providers.
Cost benefit analysis and public dialogue should quickly show you U.S. citizens should be desperately unhappy with frequent frustrations they have finding and affording health insurance - not just service. A fragmented and diverse supply of insurance makes medical claims administration a wonderful "make work" project.
I suggest you could find a better model almost anywhere else - and will if you look. Ezra Klein has given a lot of archival blog space to this question and pulled stats and research from worldwide sources. Be warned - he's far to the left of you ( but he's a Yank...how far left can he be ?).
I would encourage you to read the "What's wrong with Healthcare" link provided. It is actually a link to Al's blog which is entirely devoted to the issue in Canada. He doesn't just look at the problems but talks about motivations and solutions inside and outside the box.
In my opinion, our system is in such a sad state right now, we don't have the leisure to debate better alternatives even... we need medical professionals NOW and major money NOW regardless if it is in the public or private system and even then, we are in trouble.
