I have been listening to talk radio today and reading blogs and I am thrilled. Prime Minister Harper visits Afghanistan to show his support for our troops and Canadians lift their chins. Wait for it.... Canadians are proud! Proud of their country and their leader. It is a very pleasant surprise. If I haven't referred or inferred in previous posts, I am proud of our soldiers and proud of our prime minister. I support our troops.
I will write more at some point on my support of the Afghanistan mission and, as mentioned, my support of the Iraq mission. There, I said it - bring on the lefties. Yes, I appear to be the only one in Canada but I do support the Iraq pre-emption. I believe Saddam and Iraq were a threat to the US and also to Canada. I believe Saddam had WMDs and ties to terrorists. I sent a thank you note to President Bush on the night the US attacked. Go ahead... slam me as un-Canadian. But I digress... I do not want to take away from the point of today's blog.
For the first time in a long time, I am hearing Canadian pride, in our streets. Way to go PMSH and way to go Canadian troops!
For those of you interested in what is happening in Afghanistan, I often read a Canadian soldier's blog - Far from Canadahar. He is a good writer and he will give you some insight on what is happening there and what life is like.

Pride, in our streets, in Canada.... I'm not making this up

Not only should there be a commitment on Canada's part to be in Afganistan, but the commitment should be for an extended period of time---say ten years. Short term commitments encourage the Taliban to try to encourage the peace keeping countries to "cut and run" by bombings, etc. A long term commitment will hopefully convince the Taliban and terrorists to "cut and run".
While I believe that Canada serves a purpose in Afghanistan (peacekeeping and rebuilding a broken country), and I do support our troops there, I am very much against the war in Iraq.
Why do you believe the US invasion of Iraq was a good thing? Do you really believe it had more to do with Saddam than with a threat to the American oil supply and sustaining our lifestyles? If it was because of Saddam's great oppression and not the oil, then why aren't there more American troops in Africa fighting civil war and oppressive leaders in numerous countries there? And why hasn't there been an invasion of Saudi Arabia, which has numerous Al-Qaeda ties, including ties to the actual terrorists that planned 9/11? I think North Korea is a bigger threat than Iraq was, with people even more oppressed than those under Saddam, yet, they haven't been invaded by Americans.
I am not attacking your opinion, I really want to know your justifications for this war. I have read to much about why it shouldn't have happened, I wouldn't mind hearing reasons why so many soldiers have had to die for such a "fuzzy" cause. So far, no one has convinced me, and watching "conservative" media like fox has further turned me off the Iraq war even more.
LOL... I wrote my next column before I read your comment. I believe that I answered your questions with the next article before I knew what they were.
North Korea already has nuclear weapons so it is even more dangerous. If we had pre-emptively struck North Korea, like we did Iraq, we wouldn't have this huge threat to our existence
